5 Transactions with Beauty
This is the second in a series of "5 for Friday" – five transactions with beautiful things – art, music, poetry etc – that will make it easy for you to infuse your day with beauty.
1. Laura Letinsky
Laura Letinsky is a Canadian photographer who has intrigued me for a long time.
Her biography on Artsy says,
"Keenly aware of the rich narrative possibilities inherent in still lifes and influenced by 17th-century Dutch still life painting, Letinsky crafts tabletop vignettes that suggest larger narratives, as she explains: “It’s this idea that the narrative has already occurred; the meal has been eaten, the cornucopia has been consumed, something has been consummated, and this is what’s left in the early morning light.”
If you've read my book Calm Things, etc, you'll know of my interest in still life. Though Rob has moved on, for now anyway, to different subject matter, it's something that still interests both of us deeply. I like Letinsky's work because it's the aftermath of still life that she's showing really. She photographs the crumbs and stains and detritus from after a meal, or after the consumption has taken place. And they're beautiful, in clear but interesting light. There are subtle shadows, subtle shades, and they really could almost be paintings. And yet they don't at all pretend to be. They are simply now.

I love this poem for the word boketto. And I love it for the coffee and blueberry toast. And I love how sometimes there are mornings of jasmine, and others, sorrow.
3. Sky Ferreira, "Easy"
I've not seen the movie, Baby Driver (though friends say it's a lot of fun). However, as soon as I heard this song by Sky Ferreira one morning on the CBC......ahhhhhh.
4. Lucky Rope Bracelet from ZenShop World
I recently bought the three bracelets shown below from ZenShop World. Because, hey, couldn't we all use a bit of good luck?
This is not an affiliate post, because I'm not clever enough (yet) to do sponsored posts. But I do just love the bracelets. One day I'll even remember to take a photo of them on my own wrist!
5. Snapseed – photo editing app
Last but not least, I'm finding the app Snapseed to be a thing of beauty. Available for both Android and iPhone, it has a lot of handy features, including the text overlay option that you see in the cover photo on this post. (If you're reading the newsletter, you'll have to click on read in browser at the bottom of the newsletter to see what I'm talking about).
